18th-Dec-2008 05:51 pm - I guess winter is finally here
Misc - winter tree
They are now calling for us to get 3 to 6 inches of snow tonight, and another 6+ on Saturday night. So this should be a fun weekend.

Tomorrow night my work is taking us all to a Wild game for Christmas, and paying for us to eat at a very good restaurant in the arena too. They've done this three years in a row now and we all love it. Of course, it's also bringing it home to me that ZOMG IT IS ALMOST CHRISTMAS AND I DO NOT HAVE EVERYTHING DONE THAT I NEED TO HAVE DONE.

I'm hoping that the snow will hold off Saturday until we make it to the British Advertising Awards at the Walker Art Center. People, I don't know if you've ever gotten to see the commercials that win these awards, but if you ever get a chance, do it. This is the premiere December event at the Walker; they do multiple screenings a day and most of them sell out, even on weekdays. You might roll your eyes at the thought of watching an hour of commercials that "won awards", but some of them are funnier than entire full-length Hollywood movies. And some are just amazing visual pieces.  Seriously. If they put these commercials out on DVD, I would buy it.  Here's the commercial that won the grand prize last year...

I just have to say that [info]violet_anchovy is made of awesome. I logged in to Kingdom of Loathing to discover that I had received Valentines from Mohinder Suresh and Gabriel Gray.

Also, on the subject of Valentines...if you are on my flist, and you have one of those little "leave a Valentine for me" thingammies, but you don't get a Valentine from me...please don't be offended.  I kept seeing them pop up while I was at work, and I kept meaning to go back and leave some...but I haven't gotten around to it, for anyone.  I'm sorry.  I am made of epic fail this week.

And now, this cold that's going around has completely dragged me down, so I'm going to bed two hours early!

Mmmm. I made my second batch of fudge for the season, and then sat down with a big spoonful of the scrapings and a glass of milk. Mmmm. Peanut butter fudge.

Then I went through a pile of mail I'd been letting sit around, and discovered that two Christmas cards had accidentally gotten mixed in to it. The first was from one of my best friends from high school and his wife, and included a picture of their son, who has gotten unbelievably tall this year. The second was from [info]canadian_turtle, and included a picture that was even nicer. Mmmm...I don't need anything else for Christmas this year. I could sit and look at that all week...in fact, I probably will...thank you!!! :0)
7th-Nov-2007 10:22 pm - Christmas cards, anyone?
Detail of 'Yuuwaku' by Audrey Kawasaki

I've been meaning to do this for a week...I'm making up my Christmas card list, and if anyone would like a card from me, please leave a comment with your name and address (comments are screened on this entry, so I'll be the only freak who can see them). Christmas is the only holiday I really get into--I love shopping for presents--and I generally send out funny cards. Though last year, I sent out some gorgeous pop-up ones with snowflakes that I bought at...the Detroit airport. There's some seriously good shopping in that airport. And an indoor tram that makes me feel like I'm on Trantor. But I digress.

I normally resist doing anything Christmassy before Thanksgiving because I think it dilutes the fun of the season if you spread it out over 10 weeks, but last week I was driving home from work and they were apparently testing out lighting on the new pedestrian bridge over Hiawatha Avenue. I really hope that's what the final product will look like, as in the daytime it looks like a wrecked ship whose mast is tilted over. But the lights were gorgeous and blue and reminded me of my usual Christmas lights, and it flipped a switch somewhere in my head and made me wish it were winter already. I got a new phone very recently and am still trying out all the features, so...here's a picture of the bridge taken with the new phone.
