| So I was just going to check my flist quickly before I settled in to write a bit, but in Neil Gaiman's latest post, he'd added some widgets for his Last.fm account. And I've never bothered to pay attention to that site before, but the fact that one of his most frequently-listened-to songs right now was by Brenda Kahn made me check it out. And I ended up signing up for an account. And...man, talk about something that could completely suck away hours of my life. I've been testing it, playing really obscure bands in Winamp to see if it can identify them. Jetenderpaul, a Kansas City band that hasn't made a record since 2002? Check. Jale, a Canadian group that I think broke up before the turn of the century? Check. The ultimate test: Gone Daddy Finch, a Toledo band that we loved in college 15 years ago? CHECK. I'm freakin' impressed. (And in a weird moment, one of the top listeners for GDF is a guy who lived in my dorm who used to write and perform his own songs. I need to get a tape deck that will connect to a computer to allow me to make MP3s of the stuff he did. The politically active part of my flist would enjoy "New World Order Limosine" in particular - but I digress.) My flist is so filled with Moonlight posts right now that I feel like I need to post SOMETHING related to Heroes fandom. So...here is something. | |

| So a few weeks ago, I'm driving home from work and not really paying that much attention to the Current because they're playing a hiphop song and I just don't like hiphop. But as I'm exiting onto 94, I suddenly went, "Wait a minute? Did this guy just mention Sylar?" I figured I'd just misheard it and didn't really think much about it afterwards. Then last night about midnight, the Current played the song again. And once again, I wasn't really paying close attention, but the name "Sylar" jumped out at me. So I googled the song to find lyrics, and it turns out I am not an obsessive freak who's hearing his name for no reason: you're a cute lil styler with a half-eaten writer cut off your fitted cap, take your power like Sylar If you'd like to hear for yourself because you are also an obsessed freak, the artist is Cadence Weapon and the song ("In Search Of The Youth Crew") is currently playing on his MySpace page. | |

| Do you know what I'm watching on the Science Channel right now? Worm pr0n. No, really. They're taking to this German scientist who films worms mating with a redlight camera. Aaaand now they're showing electron microscope photos of what worm skin looks like after sex. There are so many horrifically crude jokes I could make about this, except that my family tree contains a heck of a lot of Teutonic names, so I probably shouldn't. "Mom? If you were in a German 'scheisse' video, you'd tell me, right?" Also, not sure if I mentioned this, but I learned that at the 2009 MarsCon, the musical guest of honor will be Wally Pleasant. Let me tell you, in 1993, one of the hottest musicians on WBGU was Wally Pleasant. All 7 of us who listened to our college radio DJ friends' shows loved it when they played him. So learning this fact made me bounce up and down and squee, while my friends stared at me like I'd grown an extra head. Wally Pleasant, man. Ode to Detroit? Hippie's Lament? Stupid Day Job, with the hilarious Morrissey imitation? I Hate Cops? How I Got Lost On the Road Less Traveled But Then Got Instant Karma on I-96? I am going to have to put up some MP3s, in the hopes of enticing people to buy his CDs. | |

| Have you ever gone from not even knowing something existed, to falling in love with it and desperately needing it, in the space of 30 seconds?
I stopped into Electric Fetus to buy another album and there was a song playing that just grabbed me. Turned out it was a used CD that they'd just stuck on the sound system, so I bought it on a whim and shoved it into the car stereo on the way home, and was just captivated by the first song, "Brother". It's Be He Me by The Annuals. It is a great album, kind of laid back rock, fairly acoustic with orchestral or odd instuments, but a bit of total rocking out. I'm not even exactly sure what to compare it. Hmmm...I like Death Cab, old school Modest Mouse, Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright. If you like most of those, you'll like this too. Even if you don't, you'll still like them. It's a gorgeous album. - Tags:music

| I now feel much less groused about the late start for the 07.07.07 Prince concert. The Star Tribune requires registration before you can view articles, and they remove access to them after a couple of weeks, so I'm just going to post an excerpt from Jon Bream's story below: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wanna know why Prince might have been so late for his three shows Saturday? At noon, he had one of his people call guitarist Wendy Melvoin, formerly of Prince & the Revolution, and summon her from L.A. to play that afternoon in Minneapolis. After leaving her 14-month-old son with grandma, Melvoin headed to the airport. She couldn't arrive in time for the 4 p.m. performance at Macy's (which actually started at 5:10). In fact, she landed in the Twin Cities at 9:15 p.m., 45 minutes after the Target Center show was scheduled to begin. Melvoin had performed with Prince in the past two weeks at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel so she was relatively up to speed. But when she got to Target Center, she received a surprise: "We're opening with 'Purple Rain,' " Prince said. "You're on." It was grab your guitar and hit the stage at 10:05 p.m. | |

| So...I just got back from the Prince concert. You may all touch me now. </end Cartman>
I'd say more except I'm too tired to be coherent. Just...the last time I saw him, he brought out Morris Day & The Time. Tonight, he brought out Sheila E and Wendy Melvoin--WENDY!!! I love you Wendy! I'm more exhausted than normal because we got there at 8:15, and the doors that were supposed to be opened at 7:30 WERE STILL SHUT. So we stood outside. In the 96-degree heat with a 99-degree heat index. In downtown Minneapolis. And stood. And stood. And stood. In the end the line stretched almost the entire way around the Target Center, which is a smegging big building. The concert didn't start till 10:05. But he made up for it by opening with "Purple Rain". And he also played "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Take Me With U" and "Let's Go Crazy" and "Come Together" and "Let's Go" and pulled a fat middle-aged guy up on stage and had him sing "Play That Funky Music White Boy" and...did I mention Sheila E? And WENDY???
OK...need to try to get some sleep...
In other vaguely-related news, SquillFriend did not know that Wendy and Lisa did the music for Heroes and perked up at the idea. And also, upon seeing a picture of Mohinder and his curls, she demanded to know who the "beautiful man" was and where she could see more of him. So I may finally have gained a new convert to the Church of Heroes. (Though she did ask why anyone would bother with Zachary Quinto when they could be looking at Sendhil instead...so we may have to get one or two things straight first...) | |
