Random Thought for August 7th

Detail of 'Yuuwaku' by Audrey Kawasaki

There's some kind of furniture store near my office that is closing down.  And I swear they have a sign in one window that says, "RENTAL RUG BLOWOUT".

Now, I've accepted used rugs before, from family members who didn't have pets in the house.  But...I'm trying to imagine if there are ANY circumstances under which I would purchase a used rental rug for either my home or my workplace.  I'm sure they clean them first, but at my last job, a co-worker once laid a piece of popcorn in plain sight by a wall to test how well the janitorial staff swept the carpet.  After 6 weeks, we couldn't stand to look at it anymore, and threw it away ourselves.  So I just imagine what kind of material is probably ground into those rental rugs, and shudder.

Nothing springs to mind other than eew. I mean really, it could be a handweaved Persian rug and you still couldn't pay me to take it.
Mind you, I think the idea of a rental rug is an American one. I can't recall ever having seen a place like that over here. Is it common for companies to rent rather than buy them?

I think this place was mostly office furniture, so I guess if you are renting your desks and bookshelves, you may end up renting rugs as well. But still...ewwww. To paraphrase my brother: it's kind of like "borrowing" beer. I don't think anyone's going to want it when you're done with it, thank you very much.

It'd have to be a REALLY AWESOME RUG before I bought it. Like, it would have to have a magical world under the shag pile, like Narnia for carpetting.

Hee! Or the Weaveworld. Though that's a lot creepier than Narnia.
