Music Post: Eyedea & Abilities, Heiruspecs, Right Said Fred, TV On The Radio

Torchwood - Speeding at night
Well I am enjoying a delightful bottle of Juan Benegas (an amazing malbec, if you like wine, you really should try it) so I decided that I should do another MP3 post.  If you want to check out these songs, please download and listen, and buy more songs from these artists at Amazon, eMusic, iTunes, or your local music store.

Eyedea & Abilities - Spin Cycle

This is another local rap group (but this is white boy rap! and I promise it's a white boy with actual rapping ability like Eminem, not Vanilla Ice!). I shouldn't joke because Eyedea died last fall from an accidental overdose, so he apparently had demons that he needed to face.   But he was close to Slug and the other guys in Atmosphere, so if you liked the Atmosphere song I uploaded last week, you'll likely enjoy this song, about a failing relationship.  It's really a rock song with rap lyrics.  The joy that the music brings is completely at odd with the lyrics, but the song still makes me want to dance around the room.

I soak up every little bit to sharpen my bones
All grown up still trying to find my way home
I never been cleaned or cloned my heart's never been owned
I'm lonely but everyone is lonely so at least I know I'm not alone
This road is filled with potholes but I don't need to tell you something you already know
We're both sinking in the same boat, I wanted you to stay afloat
I did what I could, but you had to learn to swim on your own
You lost your glow and the glitter and the gold
I couldn't stay alive inside your chokehold-hold-
-hold on I really gotta go cause I'm not falling into your hole

You won't spin my head around
You won't take this one from me
We won't bring it to the ground
You will never see, never see
You will never see the ground

I soak up every little bit to harden my skin
No matter how I stand still pulled by the wind
When intention goes limp wipe the face off my grin
And love me in the name and kill the people being good friends
A liar's lips are their best fingerprints, you can think of it as merit
I can taste it when we kiss tracin' paper wrists
I try to draw the line and I missed
but one day I'll be able to look back at this and make some kind of sense of it
I'm not another shin to kick, one foot in the grave both hands in the gym
It took a while to figure why we couldn't coexist but I'm not falling into your abyss

You won't spin my head around
You won't take this one from me
We won't bring it to the ground
You will never see, never see
You will never see the ground

Heiruspecs - If You Like This

OK, this is another entry inspired by jimmiefearsylar  's liking for last week's Atmosphere song.  Heiruspecs are...yet another local rap group where I live...but they do awesome things!  I repeat: I generally do not like rap, but I enjoy this song!  This is a third local group that plays instruments...some of their songs include a trombone...and they write interesting lyrics!  Seriously, if you're looking for happy new music, check them out.  Unfortunately I could not find lyrics online, but I did find their Wikipedia page, which told me something I didn't know: their name is a deliberate misspelling of 'haruspex', which is a Roman priest trained to divine omens from the entrails of sacrificed sheep.  And the album that this song comes from is called 'Antidisestablishmetabolism', which is a play on one of the longest words in standard English.  Yet the song also includes advice about not bending over in a prison shower. WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO THIS SONG ALREADY?!?!

Right Said Fred - No One On Earth

OK.  So this is the point on Sprockets where we admit that sometimes we listen to music that may be embarrassing.  Anyone who paid attention to popular music in the early 90s has heard I'm Too Sexy.  What people may not realize is that Right Said Fred put out an entire album.  And I bought it.  Yes, I bought it.  And I fucking enjoyed it.  There is a place in this world for good if silly and cheesy pop music, and Right Said Fred lived there happily.  This is a genuinely honestly happy pop song about being in love with the perfect person.  Even if you were skeptical about listening to the rap songs, check this one out.

TV On The Radio - Wolf Like Me

OK, after the last song, I feel like I need to reclaim my indie cred.  If you've never heard of them, let me give you the accurate opening line from their Wikipedia entry: "TV on the Radio is an American indie rock band formed in 2001 in Brooklyn, New York, whose music spans numerous diverse genres, from post-punk to electro and free jazz to soul music."  These are guys who make music that appeals to them at the moment, and then record it, and hope that other people enjoy it.  I admit that I am hit-and-miss with liking their music, but every few months, I go through a phase of needing to repeatedly listen to this particular song about being a werewolf.  I'll be honest: I hate werewolves who are in any way connected with sparkly vampires. But these werewolves are awesome.

Say say my playmate
Won't you lay hands on me
Mirror my malady
Transfer my tragedy

Got a curse I cannot lift
Shines when the sunset shifts
When the moon is round and full
Gotta bust that box gotta gut that fish

My mind's aflame

We could jet in a stolen car
But I bet we wouldn't get too far
Before the transformation takes
And bloodlust tanks and
Crave gets slaked

My mind has changed my body's frame but god I like it
My heart's aflame my body's strained but god I like it

My mind has changed my body's frame but god I like it
My heart's aflame my body's strained but god I like it

Charge me your day rate
I'll turn you out in kind
When the moon is round and full
Gonna teach you tricks that'll blow your mongrel mind

Baby doll I recognize
You're a hideous thing inside
If ever there were a lucky kind it's
You you you you

I know it's strange another way to get to know you
You'll never know unless we go so let me show you
I know its strange another way to get to know you
We've got till noon here comes the moon so let it show you
Show you now

Dream me oh dreamer
Down to the floor
Open my hands and let them
Weave onto yours

Feel me, completer
Down to my core
Open my heart and let it
Bleed onto yours

Feeding on fever
Down on all fours
Show you what all the
Howlin's for

Hey hey my playmate
Let me lay waste to thee
Burned down their hanging trees
It's hot here hot here hot here hot here

Got a curse we cannot lift
Shines when the sunshine shifts
There's a curse comes with a kiss
The bite that binds the gift that gives

Now that we got gone for good
Writhing under your riding hood
Tell your grandma and your mama too
It's true
We're howling forever

Super-Late Comment Time!I've been playing around with the iTunes new (to me) Genius DJ thing, which is where you pick a song in your Library and iTunes makes a playlist of similar songs based on... whatever info it gathers and compiles when you add new music and click "Update Genius". These random songs keep popping up and making me go, "What is that and where did I get it?" I searched every fanmix in my collection for that TV on the Radio song before I realized it was one of yours. Needless to say, I kind of love it. Right now it is playing between Interpol and Limp Bizkit in a mix based on a Red Hot Chili Peppers song. One embarrassing group aside, that's pretty good musical company where I stand.

Similarly, the first time the Heiruspecs song got shuffled into a Genius mix, I just assumed it was one of those Little Brother songs my friend who is really into Little Brother gave me. But it sounded so old-school and kind of like The Roots that I was like, "I don't think that's them." Again, I had to find it in the Library, and then was like, "Oohhh." And then I was like, "I have to pass that on!" Bonus points for being named after something Roman and, as I just found out, looking completely unlike any group of guys you'd see in public and think, "That there is a rap group!"

I shall return with actual thoughts on the other two songs too, but that Tv on the Radio song just got done and I remembered that I had to share this.
