Doctor Who - Captain Jack
So I just got done watching the premiere of Torchwood and...oh yeah.  It's good.  It's REALLY good.  I like it better than Doctor Who.  If they keep this up for the whole series, I'm gonna enjoy this.  I was going to talk about the hoyay moment, but then I realized: hoyay is subtext...in Torchwood, it's just plain text.

And then, to make me even more excited, Torchwood was followed by an episode of Graham Norton I hadn't seen, with David Tennant as guest.  Believe me, you haven't lived until you've listened to David talk about having farting contests with John Barrowman.  Wow.  Not what I expected as a conversational topic, but a good time was had by all.

And in other fandom news, last weekend I converted S to the Church of Heroes.  I saw her both Thursday and Friday nights this week, and she couldn't wait to talk about the show.  (She thinks the best character is Hiro, followed closely by Mohinder, but I'm willing to forgive that because she dislikes Peter Petrelli even more than I do.)  After listening to us talk, J decided she wanted in on the action, too, so I lent her my preciousssss DVDs.  Halfway through Torchwood, I got a text message: "Damn you.  I'm only 3 eps in and I'm hooked."  And then 15 minutes later, a second message: "My boyfriend would like to extend a 'Damn you', too."  Hee hee hee.

Of course this means the second season is going to have to rock even more than the first, or they're all going to get angry at me for getting them hooked for nothing.

I KNOW. I wish my friend had turned out to me a Sylar fangirl, but I'll take the Peter Hate if that's all I can get. It seriously warmed my black little heart when she opened the conversation with, "So, Peter...what's up with that loser?"

It was even funnier in real life because S is one of those people who is polite to EVERYONE, and yet that was her first comment on the show.

Really? Because I've heard "less than stellar" reviews of it by people who've already seen it. I was even going to ask someone who had BBCAmerica to record them on DVD for me so I could watch it. But then they said they didn't like it. I'd like to know what you think about the rest of the series.

And yay for hooking more Heroes fans!

I'd heard less than stellar things too, so I was filled with trepidation. Having lowered expectations may have contributed to my gushing over it (though normally, hearing negative comments makes me more likely to nitpick). But I really liked Gwen, the police officer who accidentally stumbles into their world--I thought the actress did a really good job coming across across as emotionally charged rather than melodramatic. (She reminded me in some ways of Sarah Jane Smith, though it's easy to make that kind of connection with a Doctor Who spinoff.) There were also at least three points where I went, "Wow--not expecting that," which also makes me happy with shows.

But...there's 12 more episodes to go. That's plenty of time to screw things up and make me unhappy.

okay, i stand proudly by my love for peter petrelli. although i do agree the hospital nurses would eat him alive.

and i also really liked the premiere of torchwood. i hadn't heard these negative reviews you and warden speak of -- and i also really liked the gwen character.

Peter's behavior was just too immature for me. I can't really put what I didn't like about it into words, though--Hiro's also incredibly childlike, but yet I found him fairly charming and cute. I hope that in S2, they start maturing into less-grim versions of Future!Peter and Future!Hiro, though.

One of the things I like about complex shows like Heroes is seeing people respond to the same scenes in different ways. I did my best to infect people with love for Sylar when bugging them to watch the show, but one of my friends ended up adoring Hiro, another thinks Mohinder is the greatest guy ever, a third thought Parkman was a sweetheart.

Oops--meant to also say that the negative reviews for Torchwood were from people who'd already watched the show, rather than in newspapers. They said they thought the plots were rather formulaic and that there were inconsistencies in characterization that felt like the character was being written differently because it fit that week's plot. I'd seen a half-dozen people scattered around the internet say that, and it made me worried that the people who were being positive were just saying that because they thought Captain Jack was hot.

But I'm looking forward to the next episode!
