An ethical dilemma

Detail of 'Yuuwaku' by Audrey Kawasaki

A large moth has somehow made its way into your living room, but is innocent of any other crime.  Your 11-year-old cat, who is never allowed outside, discovers the moth and begins chasing it round the room, batting it down to the ground, waiting for it to attempt to fly away, and then attacking it once again.

Do you (a) take the injured moth away and put it out of its misery, or (b) allow the cat to continue playing with it, considering that this is the closest he's been to actual "prey" since the time that bat somehow got into the house in 2005?

I give my cat free-reign when it comes to flies, but I think I'd feel bad for the moth and take it outside.

Well, it ended up fluttering underneath the TV stand, and because the TV is too big for the stand and very top-heavy, I didn't want to move the stand...so it either recovered its breath and fluttered off somewhere else in the house, or it expired in a nice quiet dark place and got swept up this afternoon when I cleaned. At least I didn't DIRECTLY kill it...

He was just so excited to have something to catch. I wish he could go outside and chase after the squirrels, but not only do I not want dirt and fleas tracked back in, he's so afraid of strangers that if he hears the neighbors next door, he rushes to the door and begs to be let in. He hasn't left the house in 3 years except for a few vet visits. Poor mouseless woobie.

Cats > moths. All the time.

I was going to say something about cats but Sendhil's hair distracted me...

Heh. Understandable. Your icon is pretty distracting, too. Who might that large-eyebrowed cutie-pie be, I wonder...?

Oh, I'd so rescue the moth from my cat. It could be my Uncle Bruce, after all ...
