Random thoughts for January 27th, and a meme!

Detail of 'Yuuwaku' by Audrey Kawasaki
This has been a not-overly-productive weekend for me. For the last few days, I've been tensing up and having massive TMJ problems (well, it's probably because of all the stress and pressure at work right now, but there isn't much I can do about that). So I've mostly been concentrating on trying to relax enough that my jaw will stop hurting. That's kind of counter-productive, in that the more you think about how much you need to relax, the harder it gets to relax.

I did go over to ESP's last night, and we finally watched Stardust and Resident Evil: Extinction. They were quite fun and I would recommend them. I thought Stardust's plot was a bit predictable but its rather odd sense of humor made up for that. (Just...Robert DeNiro's character...man.  I actually made a snide joke about him without knowing what the big reveal would be and...man. We kind of freaked out a bit.)  Also, do not watch a movie based on a video game with a video game aficionado, unless you're prepared to hear an extensive discourse on plot changes. Of course, we're all geeks in one way or another, so there were plenty of side conversations like: where Dr. Isaacs was getting an endless supply of little red dresses and combat boots in the middle of a zombie-ridden desert for all his Alice clones. Seriously, man. Wouldn't it have been easier to take them off and clean them up for the next clone? I'm just trying to be practical, here.

I also stole this TV show meme from croakvegas . It was actually rather hard to set up, as some of my favorite shows have keywords that are just too obvious, while others had ones that were just too hard to figure out, so I had to discard a few of my first choices.  And, man...making up this list really made me realize how much British TV I watch.

I do not know much of British TV, but I love a good meme, so I will guess anyway. (Plus, it's a widely known fact that the IMDB keywords are always good for a laugh.) Is #2 Life on Mars? The only one I was kind of shaky on was "police brutality", but I think it's got a bit of that going on. And, and I have absolutely no experience with this show (everything I know of it I learned from the Motivator thread), and I am not sure where it takes place, but is 8 Torchwood? (Should I even say which of the keywords led me to this conclusion?)

Hee. Yeah, I figured that you, at least, would get #2. And #8 is indeed Torchwood. I have NO IDEA which of the keywords could POSSIBLY have led you to decipher this...

Seriously, it was hard to pick both shows and keywords for this thing, in a manner that I thought wasn't too obvious but yet could still be figured out. For one of the shows on this list, I read the ones I'd picked out and realized that they perfectly fit another, more popular show, and had to start over.

Now that I am working on my list, I see that I missed another one. And it was something I absolutely knew was on there. IMDB keyword wackiness strikes again! (And it was totally "investigation"! Honest!)

If it's what I think it is, it was quite hard to pick out keywords for that one. I mean, a number of them are so ingrained in the show's fans that only one would suffice to identify it. But some of them are so general. Who assigns these keywords, anyway?

I was speaking of number nine. I was looking at it for my list and was like "really? Half of these are unusable!" Though the fact that it was a pretty long list made it better than some. There were shows I wanted to put on my list that had nothing to offer as every single one was obvious. It's weird, because on some shows they are really, really good.. and on others, they are utterly ridiculous!

Oh man! This just hit me, and is probably very, very wrong, but if number three is what I think it is, you will be the first person I have ever known who is neither "me" nor "my brother" to have ever watched this show. Is it... animated? If not, please disregard my enthusiasm, for I have no idea what it is.

I know! I tried to include Father Ted, but the keyword list for that one is so limited and obvious that I actually sighed in disgust. And yes, number 9 had a lengthy keyword list, but when you discard the ones that are obvious, it's not as varied as you'd think. Or perhaps we've just spent too much time obsessing in the middle of its fandom...

Hee. Yes, number 3 is indeed animated! And I just recently re-watched the episode "Bully", which is one of my all-time favorites.

I had to look up TMJ, and all I can say is, I hope that you feel better soon! *hugs*

I was wary of watching Stardust - I'd always thought that the title was laughable - but it was actually surprisingly good. And I'd already known about DeNiro's character, but the reveal was still pretty damn hilarious.

I'm fairly certain that #9 is Heroes, and my guess is that #3 is Dr. Who. I hope someone figures out what #4 is, because that sounds like the kind of show I'd be into xD

Thanks! As chronic conditions go, there are far far worse things that one could have. But when I have a flare-up, it's just so aggravating. Eating hurts, talking hurts, and you can't help thinking about it all the time, which makes you tense up, which adds to the hurting. It's just so annoying.

#9 is correct! #3 is not, however. It was one of my favorite shows in college but it's one of those things that people either loved or hated, so I don't know if people will think of it (or, if they're under 25 and outside the US, if they've ever seen or heard of it). But I just got it on DVD and so I've been all excited about it lately.

Oh wow, that sucks so, SO much :P I'd always wondered what was the matter when you talked about your jaw, but I didn't want to be rude. I still hope that this flare-up doesn't last much longer.

Aw, shucks. I looked it up, and you're right, I've never heard of it until now. Ooh, and that's great that you'll get to re-watch it!

Oh, #4 has to be The Kids in the Hall. I could've gotten it from "chicken" and "hooker" alone, plus I already knew you were one of the TWoP Heroes people who liked KITH.

#10 is... MST3K? (I suppose Joel/Mike and the Mads represent good versus evil...)

#3 is, um, Dr. Katz? I think I only watched that show once, but obviously I watched a lot of Comedy Central in the early-to-mid-90s, so I saw the ads. Was there a subtitle to Dr. Katz? I keep getting the urge to say "Dr. Katz, Medicine Woman," but obviously that's not right.

I have no idea what "billionaire / Wisconsin / sarcasm" is, but is he single? :D

...aaand I just realized that in going "Ooh! Game!" and clicking on the lj-cut, I completely overlooked your mention of your TMJ. I'm sorry, how insensitive of me. :P

When people tell me not to concentrate on it and to let my pain go, I usually want to kick them where it hurts, but somehow, it sounds a little more appealing coming from Dr. Ramamurthy.

At his clinic, patients work not only on mobilizing the affected limbs but also on "desensitizing" the area with greater and greater external stimulation — first with feathers, then with terry cloth, then with warm wax.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks! It's one of those things that I just grumble about. And then I feel guilty for grumbling, because, my gosh, think about people who have something like fibromyalgia or Crohn's disease, and how much worse that would be - at least I just have flare-ups rather than constant pain. But when you're right in the middle of one and it feels like a screwdriver is being jammed into your jaw, it's hard not to bitch and moan, or to scream FUCK YOU at the world in general and anyone who vaguely irritates me in specific...so it's taught me some lessons in controlling my temper that Gabriel Gray could have benefitted from.
28th-Jan-2008 04:35 pm (UTC)
Also...I tried so hard not to go here...but the imagery of Dr. Ramamurthy's son offering that sort of treatment is just intensely distracting. And appealing. It might actually make me read real person fic.
28th-Jan-2008 07:07 pm (UTC)
"Everything becomes contingent upon the pain," he says. "People let it start controlling their lives. They cannot work, they cannot participate in life or go to the movies or have sex."

...So, y'know, the test of successful treatment would involve his son taking you to a movie and having sex with you.

(Er, I don't mean *at* the movies, obviously, you'd get arrested.)

As for "billionaire / Wisconsin / sarcasm"...he is indeed single, and he's on a wife hunt.

..."Who Wants To Marry An Acerbic Dairy Tycoon"?

And on that last note:

04. chicken / hooker / men in drag HBO's Real Sex XVI
07. mohawk haircut / violence / roommate Extreme Makeover
08. investigation / bisexual / Wales CSI: Llwydcoed
10. good versus evil / space station / silhouette Indonesian Puppet Theater Presents: Star Wars
29th-Jan-2008 03:35 am (UTC)
08. investigation / bisexual / Wales CSI: Llwydcoed

This? Priceless...
28th-Jan-2008 04:27 pm (UTC)
I keep getting the urge to say "Dr. Katz, Medicine Woman," but obviously that's not right
HA! I have done that myself on a number of occasions. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist".

And you are indeed correct on #4 and #10, as well! As for "billionaire / Wisconsin / sarcasm"...he is indeed single, and he's on a wife hunt.
28th-Jan-2008 09:35 pm (UTC)
Is #7 The Young Ones? Or am I just imagining things...
29th-Jan-2008 03:31 am (UTC)
Hee! You are quite correct. Hippie! LOL

Hmmm. I need some Vyvyan icons...
