Misc - paper butterflies
My friend E said to me this winter, "You should have plenty of boyfriends. Because women like you, who are actually interested in gaming and science fiction, are rare, and there are plenty of gamers out there who would love a girlfriend who talks about this stuff with them." (For the record, E has said of himself that if his wife hadn't found him, he would probably be living alone in his parents' basement surrounded by technology right now.)

So here's how much of a gaming girlfriend I am. This weekend, K said hesitantly to me, "You know, after you went to sleep, I was wide awake and just couldn't drift off myself. So I listened to you breathe for about a half-hour...and then I went downstairs and played Oblivion till 5:30 am."

And I did not find this offensive at all, as he apparently feared I might - frankly, I'm happy he went down there instead of tossing and turning and potentially waking me up.

He does claim that he's through with WoW for good.  But as E's wife S said, "Riiiiiiight.  No more Warcraft.  Kind of like how crack addicts can stop smoking any time they want to."  But, you know, I'm prepared for what to do during the eventual relapse.  I still haven't played Viva Pinata, even though I bought it several months ago.

Hee K sounds cute, and I totally approve of him playing games instead of waking you up.

I think he might have genuinely been worried that I might have been annoyed. Actually, I can't believe I slept through him getting in and out of bed - I must have REALLY been tired, because normally that kind of stuff wakes me up instantly. But as someone who's stayed up till dawn playing games on a number of occasions before - and even had a few weekends where I started playing after work Friday and did not stop except for pee and food breaks till Sunday evening - I really don't see any problem. (Of course some of my friends would probably say, THAT'S my problem... LOL)

My boyfriend and I started dating in early December, and when we were spending that New Year's Eve together, I mentioned that I wanted to kick his butt at videogames. The look on his face was priceless, all "omg, a girl who wants to play videogames!" ^_^ I worry what will happen to him when we move to England because his Warcraft guild's raiding will start at 4am London time. ^_^

I like this K guy. =)

I'm betting K's answer to that would be, "Buy a backup alarm clock, in case the first one fails to go off." ;0)

I've never played any of the GTAs and I think I'm about to take up GTA 4. K and E have both commented that it's harder to control the vehicles in this one, so I'm hoping I might be able to get a leg-up on them since I wouldn't be handicapped by the change in the physics engine. It's probably a futile hope, but I shall cling to it.

I literally laughed out loud when I read this. Why can't Aerosmith write a rock ballad with lyrics like that?

I tried to compose a verse for such a ballad, but it wound up sounding like one of those "Real Men of Genius" commercials for Budweiser. So....yeah. Better to just throw it away, now.

I'm curious what kind of games you like to play. You don't seem to mention it in your LJ very often.

If he's keeping score, you probably won girlfriend awesome points for not finding it offensive. ;) No reason you should. It's better he go kill daedric monsters and giant rats for a few hours than wake up you.

I don't talk about playing games a lot mostly because I just haven't been playing them this year, for some reason. Well, I haven't played Sim City because I had several GB of mods and buildings I'd downloaded from Simtropolis, and moving those over and getting everything set up again on the new (now not-so-new) computer has turned out to be a Herculean task - I spent 3 hours on a recent Sunday afternoon and still didn't get it all set up. And I kind of burned out on Civ IV last winter, though I'm starting to want to play it again. I tend to like those sorts of games: exploring and building and creating. Though I cheat and play all easy cities in SC, because I want to have plenty of money to make the city all pretty. And I tend to abandon Civ games before finishing, because exploring the map is half the fun for me.

The weird thing is that K turns out to be a big fan of both these games. He's talked about some mods he uses in Civ IV that sound fun, which is what's prompting me to want to play again.

I have a Wii too, which is the first console I've bought since the Sega Genesis in college (yes, I am old). I suck at fighting games, but my brain just works perfectly with anything Mario- or Sonic-related. I'm slowly working my way through Super Mario Galaxy (wound up starting over when I bought my own copy of the game, I had been playing it at a friend's) and I really need to get my butt in gear and finish Rayman Raving Rabbids, considering that there's now a sequel out. And of course, there's the old standby: Wii Bowling. That never gets old.
